November 2023

Dear Friends,

We are thrilled to be returning to a full production schedule, and capacity after 4 years of outdoor performances, short films, zoom readings and acting coaching online, thanks to the Pandemic. Thankfully Casabuena Cultural Productions was able to navigate the last 4 years of artistically challenging times because of encouragement and help from donors like you!

In June of 2020 we produced a short film called You’re Not Always Alone for the 48hr Global Film Challenge. It was a Drama set in a locked down world that resembled ours at the time. We were very proud of our first attempt at a Drama.

In May of 2021 we returned to producing live theater, outside at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, where we had three wonderful sold out performances of When Shakespeare’s Ladies Meet by Charles George. That same spring we also filmed a short called Checkov’s Gun with three of our former youth (now adult) company members, Angel James, Jared Taylor and Sebastian Scott.

In May of 2022 we produced another outdoor show at West Laurel Hill. We remounted MmmBeth by Allison Williams, and Company Member Jared Taylor got to reprise his role as McDuff after tackling it the first time in 2014 when he was 13 years old. Two months later in July, we  filmed a comedic short called Are You Happy at a local gift shop called Windfall Gallery in Chestnut Hill.

As we approach 2024 and gear up for our exciting 10th Season, we are asking you to consider making a donation to Casabuena Cultural Productions. We are raising funds for our next show Beirut by Alan Bowne, starring Neena Boyle, William McHattie and Sean Vermeire. This show will run in the Skinner Studio Theater above Plays & Players downtown in Rittenhouse Square, as well as at a venue TBA in NW Philadelphia during the last two weeks of April 2024.  We will also be returning this year to compete in the 48hr Film Project in the summer, so any contribution you make will go toward making all these endeavors possible!

With your help we can surely make our 10th Season the best yet! Can we count on you to donate this year?

Every donation helps us continue to be able to offer the kind of experiences that help artists of all levels grow and excel in any creative avenue they wish to pursue, and we really appreciate your consideration and support. Donors get not only our love and gratitude, but some levels include perks like, special VIP seating, a cameo in one of our films, and other fun things we came up with to show you how much your support means to us.

There are a couple ways to donate:

1. You can donate by credit card online at this link: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/casabuena-cultural-productions

2. If you prefer, you can also donate by check.

Please mail checks to Mariangela Saavedra, 121 W Duval Street, Philadelphia, PA 19144.

NOTE: Checks should be made payable to Fractured Atlas

Jim Broyles was a wonderful human being who shared his talents and friendship with all of us involved here at Casabuena and other local area theaters. He passed away unexpectedly on July 6, 2023, and left a giant hole in our hearts and theater community. He was a founding company member of Casabuena, who acted in all but two of our short films, and all but 4 of our theatrical productions. He was a bright light and talent, and we will always be grateful for the time he spent with us. Below is an excerpt from the Eulogy I shared at his memorial in August:

Our Friend Jim was an actor. He didn’t study it in school, beyond a few electives in college, but he learned by doing it over the last 16 years. He performed in plays all around the Philadelphia region, more than 30 shows between 2007 and 2023. Several of which I had the pleasure of directing him in for Casabuena, Allens Lane and The Stagcrafter Theater. He also appeared in 9 short films, and lent his voice talents to 2 others. He loved doing voice acting, and his voice can still be heard on G-town radio 92.9fm introducing a local Talk Show that airs bi-monthly on that station. He was always interested in taking on projects that would strengthen his acting skills, and challenge his creativity. I never passed on an opportunity to work with him on stage or screen, and twice I even got to perform onstage with him. Everyone I know who worked with him always remarked on what a natural talent he was and how much they enjoyed sharing the stage with him. He will definitely be remembered by those who got to see him shine in front of an audience.

Our friend Jim has left us far too soon. He has left us with a hole in our hearts we will now fill with our memories of him, and our thoughts of him, and our love for him. He will never be forgotten, and he will be thought of often. He lives on in each of us who knew and cared for him. And while that doesn’t seem like nearly enough, it is what we will hold on to when we feel sad that he is gone. Jim wouldn’t want us to be sad, he would want us to smile and remember how he entertained us and made us laugh. He would want us to see him in all the things around us that he enjoyed. We see you Jim in all these things. We miss you immeasurably, but are so very glad we knew you. Even if only for a little while.

“Goodnight Sweet Prince. And Flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.”- William Shakespeare,  Hamlet, Act 5 Sc. 2

Due to the Pandemic we canceled our 8th production season in 2020. We spent the year focused on Online Acting Coaching and planning for more short films as opposed to live theater events.

In June of 2020 we competed in the 48hr Global Film Challenge, where we produced our first DRAMA short film. Watch the Directors cut- HERE.

For our official 8th Season in 2021, we shot a short film in March of 2021 called Chekov’s Gun written by Anghus Houvouras, staring Angel James, Sebastian Scott and Jared Taylor. It is in Post Production awaiting final Music Editing and will be entered in Film Festivals in the Fall of 2022.

In May of 2021 we produced an outdoor theater performance of a one act play called When Shakespeare’s Ladies Meet by Charles George, at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, starring Kate Bianco, Neena Boyle, Sarah Heddins, Angel James, Teresa Nutter and Stephanie C Kernisan.

This coming May we will be back at West Laurel Hill with a re-mount of Mmmbeth by Allison Williams. A Show we did back in 2014 for our second season! You can get TICKETS HERE, for this fun comedy outside on the lawn!

We are still actively planning to film our first feature film A Casabuena Adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights Dream, hopefully to start production no later than Spring 2023.

It feels great to be back in action and we thank you all for your support during these last few years of uncertain future! Once More into the breech! Thank you for coming along for the ride! Huzzah!

Our Holiday offering this year is a fun romp through satire-land with Who’s Holiday! by Matthew Lombardo. This show is fun, sassy, classy, crazy and off the hook all in one!! There is music, and audience participation, and Dr Seuss jokes a plenty! It runs an Hour and 10 min without intermission, and if you work in the Music, Film, or Theater Arts you can purchase one of our $10 tickets for this riot of a show! (non industry tix are $15) There aren’t many chances to see it so try to catch it if you can, you will be very glad you did!

Watch the promo video for this great show below and come support local arts this month!

Happy Holidays to you from all of us at Casabuena!

Critical Acclaim for other productions of Who’s Holiday:
“In Matthew Lombardo’s one-woman show, Cindy Lou Who is all grown up — and she isn’t quite the adorable child you remember from Dr. Seuss’s classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Chronicling the years that have passed since Cindy caught the Grinch in her living room, Lombardo’s seventy-minute comedy, spoken entirely in rhyming couplets, is a comic tour de force.” —Carey Purcell, The Village Voice

“… a comical riot, shining with moxie-laden tastelessness and irreverence. [Cindy Lou] engages front row audience members, sings with gutsy verve and even raps a bit. After an hour of lunacy, a sweet, sentiment ending is added, sending audience members off with a warm smile and probably exhausted from laughter.” —Michael Dale, Broadway World

November 2019

Dear Friends,

We are having a GREAT 7th season at Casabuena Cultural Productions this year because of help from donors like you!

In June we produced A Casabuena Evening of Short Plays and Short Films at Allens Lane Theater. This show featured the premiere of FIVE never before screened short films we produced over the last 6 years, some dating back as far back at 2014! Eleventeen, was written and directed by Youth Company (now Company) Member Jared Taylor back in 2015 and featured performances by some fantastic Casabuena Ensemble Company Members from back in our early days! The show also showcased many of our graduating Youth Company Members, in several hilarious David Ives One-Acts, alongside our Adult Mentors! No longer Youth Company Members now, Maxwell Vlam, Angel James, Jared Taylor and Halin Hegamyer-Gershenow will be working with our new Youth Company Members as Mentors in the seasons ahead!

In August we participated in the 2019 Philadelphia 48 Hour Film Project, where we wrote and produced a short film in two days! Our Musical The Best Time of the Year was co-written by former Youth Company Members (Now Company Members) Jared Taylor and Angel James. Our film WON Best Graphics (for Youth Company Member Taj Jacob’s awesome VFX work) and Best Choreography (for our Director Eric Gershenow and Cinematographer Angel James’ work), and it was Nominated for Best Editing (Angel James) and Best Original Song for the soundtrack written by Company Members Eric Gershenow and Jared Taylor!

As we approach our final production this year in December and gear up for our exciting 2020 Season, we are asking you to consider making a donation to Casabuena Cultural Productions. We are still raising funds for our next show Who’s Holiday, starring company member Kate Bianco as a grown up Cindy Lou Who. This show will run at Allens Lane Theater and The Stagecrafters Theater December 7th, 8th and 14th. We will also be submitting some of our newly premiered films to several film festivals, so any contribution you make will go toward making these endeavors possible!

With your help we can surely make our 8th Season the best yet! Can we count on you to donate this year?

Every donation helps us continue to be able to offer the kind of experiences that prepare our Youth Company Members for performing in any creative avenue they wish to pursue, and we really appreciate your consideration and support. Donors get not only our love and gratitude, but some levels include perks like, special VIP seating, an ad libbed line in the play about you, a cameo in one of our films, and other fun things we came up with to show you how much your support means to us.
